Abstract
Penggunaan gas engine merupakan salah satu pilihan untuk menghemat konsumsi bahan bakar, terutama dengan memanfaatkan LNG sebagai bahan bakar. Namun, penggunaan gas engine memerlukan investasi awal yang cukup besar, khususnya apabila diterapkan pada kapal ferry Ro-Ro. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kelayakan penggunaan Marine Gas Engine Caterpillar pada kapal ferry dari aspek teknis dan ekonomis. Analisis kelayakan ekonomi didasarkan pada potensi penghematan biaya bahan bakar. Tahapan penelitian meliputi penentuan rute pelayaran dan kapal yang digunakan sebagai objek penelitian. Kapal yang dipilih adalah KMP Legundi yang melayani rute Merak–Bakauheni dengan daya mesin 2 × 3.500 HP. Hasil perhitungan menunjukkan bahwa tahanan kapal sebesar 244,674 kN dan kebutuhan minimum BHP sebesar 5.386,31 HP. Berdasarkan kebutuhan tersebut dipilih empat unit gas engine Caterpillar G3516C dengan daya mesin 1.622 kW dan daya generator 1.555 kW. Kebutuhan bahan bakar diesel sebesar 96.874,71 liter per bulan, sedangkan kebutuhan bahan bakar LNG untuk gas engine sebesar 3.925,57 MMBtu per bulan. Tangki LNG dan vaporizer menggunakan sistem Wärtsilä LNGPac yang telah mencakup seluruh komponen pendukung. Electric converter dan motor listrik menggunakan produk General Electric tipe MV7000 dan MV560 dengan daya motor listrik 3.500 HP. Biaya bahan bakar solar mencapai US$2.456.792,71 per tahun, sedangkan biaya bahan bakar LNG sebesar US$600.612,67 per tahun. Dengan demikian, penggunaan LNG menghasilkan penghematan biaya bahan bakar sebesar US$1.856.180,03 per tahun. Analisis kelayakan investasi menggunakan metode Net Present Value (NPV) dan Internal Rate of Return (IRR) menghasilkan nilai NPV sebesar US$7.553.368,08 dan IRR sebesar 34%. Oleh karena itu, investasi ini dinilai layak (feasible) apabila hanya mempertimbangkan penghematan biaya bahan bakar dan investasi awal pada gas engine.

The use of gas engines is one of the alternatives for reducing fuel consumption, particularly by utilizing LNG as the primary fuel. However, implementing gas engines requires a substantial initial investment, especially for Ro-Ro ferry vessels. This study aims to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of using Caterpillar Marine Gas Engines on a ferry vessel. The economic feasibility assessment is based on potential fuel cost savings. The research involved several stages, including determining the shipping route and selecting the vessel for the case study. KMP Legundi, operating on the Merak–Bakauheni route with a propulsion power of 2 × 3,500 HP, was selected as the study object. The ship resistance was calculated to be 244.674 kN, while the minimum required brake horsepower (BHP) was 5,386.31 HP. Based on these requirements, four Caterpillar G3516C gas engines were selected, each with an engine output of 1,622 kW and a generator capacity of 1,555 kW. The diesel fuel consumption was estimated at 96,874.71 liters per month, whereas the LNG consumption for the gas engines was calculated to be 3,925.57 MMBtu per month. The LNG storage tank and vaporizer utilized the Wärtsilä LNGPac system, which includes all required supporting components. The electric converter and propulsion motors were supplied by General Electric, using the MV7000 converter and MV560 motor with a power output of 3,500 HP. The annual fuel cost for diesel operation was estimated at US$2,456,792.71, while the annual LNG fuel cost was US$600,612.67, resulting in annual fuel cost savings of US$1,856,180.03. The investment feasibility was evaluated using Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). The results showed an NPV of US$7,553,368.08 and an IRR of 34%, indicating that the investment is economically feasible when considering fuel cost savings and the initial investment cost of the gas engine alone.
