Abstract

Ambon is one of the earthquake-prone areas that has a high intensity because it is located between three main plates namely the Eurasian, Indo-Australian and Pacific plates. This study aims to determine the effect of global and local speed models on the process of forward modeling and inversion, determine the moment tensor of and know the Coulomb stress patterns from the Ambon earthquake event on 31 October 2017. The data used in this study are data from January 2017 to April 2018, consists of 38 earthquake events recorded by 40 earthquake stations. Where every earthquake event was recorded by 4 to 17 earthquake stations. The data used in determining the 1D local speed model consists of 38 earthquake events, while the data used in modeling the Coulomb stress and source mechanism consists of 4 earthquake events, which occurred on 31 October 2017, where the earthquake was a unique because it had a time of occurrence the adjacent earthquake and the whole is a mainshock. First step in this research, P and S wave picking is done from earthquake events that occur in the Ambon area. This picking is used to find the travel time of P and S waves, which will be used to determine the speed of the 1D earth model and the results of the local speed will be compared with global speed models. Where the best solution between the two will be used as a reference for the process of determining the source mechanism and knowing the Coulomb stress at the earthquake event that occurred on October 31, 2017. The results of the comparison of local and global speed models show that the global speed model has a better solution, this is proven the reduction variance value of the four earthquakes is close to 1. The results of the modeling of the source mechanism represented in the form of beachball show that the fault pattern in the Ambon from the first to the third earthquake had the same fault pattern that is thrust, while the fourth fault pattern was normal-fault. The Coulomb stress pattern of the Ambon earthquake event 31 October 2017 shows that the largest Coulomb stress (0.4 - 1 bar) is located at a depth of 30-43 km (horizontal cross section), while the vertical cross section results show that the largest Coulomb pressure is located at a depth of 31- 38 km.
