Abstract

Piper retrofractum Vahl. or Javanese long pepper is native plant in Indonesia. Based on research that conducted by Chansang et al., (2005), showed that fruit extract of Javanese long pepper has the potential to control mosquito larvae, because have the content of bioactive and biofunctional like dibutilamide and pipericide. The purpose of this study is to determine how the effectiveness of two types of larvicide extracts from the leaves and fruit of Javanese long pepper, against mosquito Culex sp. larvae.
The extraction process in this study using maceration method with ethanol 95%. And then the effectiveness of extract observed by LC50 values from the percentage (%) data of death and the percentage (%) pupa formation. Then the data were Probit analyzed to know the potential of larvicide from this extract against Culex sp. larvae and expressed as Lethal Concentration (LC), ANOVA One Way to know the effect of the concentration extract to the number of larvae mortality and the Tukey test to find the significant differences between those with a concentration level of 95%.
The results showed that the fruit extract of Javanese long pepper was more effective than Javanese long pepper leaf extract in inhibiting larvae of the mosquito Culex sp.. The value of LC50 Javanese long pepper fruit extracts was 6.96 ppm and the value of LC50 extract Javanese long pepper leaves was 3071.67 ppm. According to WHO (2009), a compound to be an active in the larvicide test if the value obtained LC50 <100 ppm.
