Abstract
Perang.
it made sense to talk about a „chinese‟ architecture, a „swiss‟ architecture, an „indian‟
architecture. one hundred years later, under the influence of wars, diverse political
regimes, different states of development, national and international architectural
movements, individual talents, friendships, random personal trajectories and
technological developments, architectures that were once specific and local have
become interchangeable and global. national identity has seemingly been sacrificed to
modernity”.
===========================================================
War. World war one and two have provided a wide range of negative effects
to the rest of the world in many aspects. One of them is culture, where new cultures
force to enter and replaces the existing culture, as stated by Rem Koolhaas “in 1914, it
made sense to talk about a „chinese‟ architecture, a „swiss‟ architecture, an „indian‟
architecture. one hundred years later, under the influence of wars, diverse political
regimes, different states of development, national and international architectural
movements, individual talents, friendships, random personal trajectories and
technological developments, architectures that were once specific and local have
become interchangeable and global. national identity has seemingly been sacrificed to
modernity”. Similar to Indonesia, Nusantara architecture has been sacrificed for the
sake of modernity.
Should an architect remain silent about this case? To handle this issue it is
certainly necessary an architectural intervention is needed to solve this problem. An
experiment through wishful thinking “What would Nusantara architecture (betang
house) be if world war one and two had never happened?”, “What will Indonesian
architecture (betang house) be if the incoming foreign culture is responded with
critical thinking?”. The output of this project, beside aiming to visualize Nusantara
architecture, is also to restore the national identity and the fundamentalism of
Nusantara architecture, because The loss of national identity is the greatest defeat a
nation can know.
