Abstract

The purpose of the final project is to convey the potential within scavengers’ community as the future waste – recycling industry. The potential within inorganic waste results in one of the fastest – growing industry in Indonesia. The phenomenons show that the users participating in the waste – recycling industry, doing their work manually. Data shows that the scavengers who are the main characters in this phenomenon; build their own living units around the waste. The Integrated Green Recycle Factory is a design response to the issue and design context. The design is birthed by a phenomenon which involves the local central scavenger community in Keputih,Surabaya who work for 5-8 hours everyday to collect and select inorganic waste. Many of them come from outside Surabaya. They build their own units as a place to work and to live in, that are categorized into informal-settlement as the units do not follow the local regulation. The complex issue is then solved thoroughly by using behaviour setting approach within the very first few steps in the design process. Behavior setting is used to analyze users' activities and their experiences which resulted in design program. Sustainability principles choose the right design actions that correspond well to building needs and is appropriate to local climate and resources. The circular economy principles emphasize the essence of the design object: recycling. The final outcome of the design is expected to be able to answer all the design problems within the context.
