Abstract

Steel pipe is one of important components of a vessel. The pipes are usually joined using welding and therefore they are susceptible to corrosion, especially on the inside surface. The remain thickness of material at the weld tie can be determined by using ultrasonic testing. This research discusses how to determine the remain thickness of material on the inner surface of carbon steel pipe due to corrosion at welded tie on a ship. Most studies regarding how to determine the thickness of residual material on the inner surface of carbon steel pipe are usually carried out using ultrasonic testing with dual crystal normal probes. Modifying the shape of the probe shoe should enable the detection of the remain thickness of material on the inner surface of the carbon steel pipe. This research uses three variations of pipe diameters (48 mm, 96 mm and 160 mm) where each specimen is made of artificial crack with a depth of 0.5 mm, 1.5 mm and 2.0 at the root. Based on the experiments conducted, the determination of residual thickness of the material on the surface of the carbon steel pipe can be done by making modifications to the ultrasonic probe shoe flaw detector probe crystal normal two. The rest of the thickness of the pipe material can be determined by reducing the thickness of the pipe is reduced by the depth of corrosion defects are detected by ultrasonic flaw detector. In ultrasonic testing with the direction of crystal probe interface that is perpendicular to the axis of the weld has the ability to detect defects depth better than the direction of the interface the probe crystal axis direction of the weld. This is because the ultrasonic wave cut transversely at the flaw so that these defects easily reflect back ultrasonic waves to be received by the probe.
