Abstract

Plant respond to herbivory activity by releasing secondary metabolites, deterrents, and leaf nutrients. This study aims to determined the differences and correlations between herbivory levels and chemical contents of the leaves of R. apiculata and R. stylosa in different habitus of mangrove in Lembung Paseser, Madura. Sampling of damaged leaves are randomly on tree and sapling habitus. The results showed that the level of herbivores on R. apiculata and R. stylosa showed significant differences, where the leaf area was damaged and the percentage of herbivores R. apiculata was higher than R. stylosa (p = 0.0001, p = 0.0002). The leaf nutrient content in R. apiculata was higher than that of R. stylosa although it was not significant in phosphorus (p = 0.438). While the content of secondary metabolites in R. apiculata was significantly higher than R. stylosa in lignin (p = 0.0001), and polyphenols although not significant (p = 0.136). The deterrent / repellent content was significantly higher in R. stylosa than R. apiculata in crude fiber (p = 0.001). While the leaf nutrient content in R. stylosa was higher than R. apiculata although it was not significant in water content (p = 0.567). Herbivory levels in the R. apiculata species were significantly positively correlated with the area of leaf damage (r = 0.928; p = 0.018) and significantly negatively correlated with lignin (r = -0,697; p = 0.037), and were not significantly positively correlated with water content (r = 0.299; p = 0.434) and nitrogen (r = 0.241; p = 0.392), and not significantly negative correlation with crude fiber (r = -0.287; p = 0.454), polyphenols (r = -0.192; p = 0.621), and phosphorus (r = -0.318; p = 0.404). Herbivory levels in R. stylosa species were significantly positively correlated with the area of leaf damage (r = 0.810; p = 0.008), and water content (r = 0.796; p = 0.010), and significantly negatively correlated with phosphorus (r = - 0.749; p = 0.020), and not significantly correlated positively with crude fiber (r = 0.032; p = 0.936), and insignificantly negatively correlated with polyphenols (r = -0.376; p = 0.324) and lignin (r = - 0.549; p = 0.126).
