Abstract

The need for electricity in Indonesia is increasing every year. The demand for electricity will continue to increase as long as the population in Indonesia has increased. According to BPS data in 2019, the population in Indonesia is 267 million. This number will be estimated to increase by 2045 by 450 million people (BPS). To realize energy security, Indonesia must be able to see its potential as a maritime country. As a maritime country with a total sea area of nearly 8 million km2, Indonesia can apply energy sourced from the sea, for example the energy of ocean currents. In this study, the authors numerically simulate experimental turbines from secondary data using CFD. The software that I use is ANSYS V18.1. The flow model used is laminar because it is consistent with secondary data analysis. After the numerical simulation results are obtained, validation is performed. If the average error rate is more than 10%, the simulation must be repeated. The variations chosen in this study were the number of blades of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 and the type of S1210 hydrofoil. After a comparison, it is proven that with the increasing number of blades used, the torque of the turbine will increase. However, the number of blades that are more than 4 will reduce torque due to the large wake effect on the downstream area. Likewise with the S1210 hydrofoil. The presence of a positive camber that is large enough to make the turbine torque increases. The highest efficiency of NACA 4 blades is followed by S1210 2 blades, NACA 0012 3 blades, NACA 0012 2 blades, NACA 0012 5 blades, and NACA 0012 6 blades namely 25%, 22%, 20%, 19%, 16% and 13%.
