Abstract

Setiap tahun, kebutuhan pupuk Fatty Acid cenderung meningkat, namun produksi Fatty Acid cenderung stagnan.

==================================================================================================================
Indonesia is one of the largest producers of palm oil in the world after Malaysia. Oil palm was first discovered in West Africa by local indigenous people. Then brought into Asia through the Bogor Botanical Gardens which was planted in 1848 because of its attractive appearance. After several years of observing oil palm, it turns out that the trees and fruit can grow well in several parts of Indonesia such as Sumatra, Kalimantan and Papua. Palm oil is obtained from the palm fruit (Elaeis Guineesis).
Oil palm is one of the raw material sources for the Oleochemical industry which is a derivative of natural oil and fat and comes from plants (oil palm, coconut, sunflower, soybean, etc.) as well as from animal origin (beef, buffalo, fish fat. , and others). In general, Oleochemical is the result of splitting the Triglyceride structure from Oil and Fat in the form of fatty acids and glycerol. However, the process then develops to produce other derivatives, namely by modifying the Carboxylic Acid group from fatty acids, chemically and biologically. Oleochemicals themselves are often categorized as Fatty Acids, Fatty Methyl Esters, Fatty Alcohols, Fatty Amines and Glycerols. Fatty Acids can be in a saturated or unsaturated state. Fatty Acids, which all carbon chains contain two hydrogen atoms and no double bonds, are saturated fatty acids. Fatty acids in general have the formula R-COOH where R is an alkyl group. Fatty Acids are used as soap and detergent products, cosmetics and personal care products, lubricating oils, surface coatings and polymers as well as biofuels.
The main reasons why Fatty Acid is used more than petrochemicals to produce these products, namely:

• Fatty Acid is produced from renewable sources while raw materials from petrochemicals are taken from non-renewable sources
• Products derived from Fatty Acids are more easily biodegradable and are environmentally friendly
• Products derived from petrochemicals require greater energy because they contain large amounts of NOx, SO2, CO and hydrocarbon pollutants.
Every year, the need for Fatty Acid fertilizer tends to increase, but the production of Fatty Acid tends to be stagnant. This needs to be avoided, because if this condition continues, there will be a deficit in Fatty Acid supply. Fatty Acid supply deficit is very much avoided, because if this happens, the amount of Fatty Acid applied to the oleochemical industrial area will decrease, so it can be ascertained that productivity in the oleochemical factory will decrease. Therefore, it is necessary to build a new Fatty Acid factory which has a large enough capacity to cover the existing deficit. In addition, the construction of a Fatty Acid factory also supports government programs, because with the increase in the supply of Fatty Acid, it is expected that productivity in the oleochemical sector will also increase.
This Fatty Acid factory will be built in Asahan Regency, North Sumatra. The selection of the venue was through several considerations, including:
• Close to the source of raw materials, namely Palm Oil and Palm Kernel Oil obtained from PT Mahkota Group, located in Medan
• The factory location is close to main transportation routes, Asahan Regency has a port so that it will facilitate marketing. This Fatty Acid product can be transported easily to domestic and foreign marketing areas.
• The factory location is also close to the largest water source in Sumatra. Water needs are obtained from the Asahan River, which is a 147 km long river which has a fairly large discharge.
Broadly speaking, the manufacture of Fatty Acid uses a distillation process. The separation is based on the boiling points of each carbon chain. The short carbon chain will separate earlier than the long carbon chain. Distillation can remove unwanted colors and odors. The composition of the product depends on the raw materials used. Like coconut oil, it contains a lot of C8 (Caprilic Acid) and C10 (Caoric Acid). Hydrocarbons with short chains when reacted with mono and polyhydric alcohol then form esters. This ester is used as a synthetic lubricating oil. For fatty acids which contain a lot of myristic acid and palmitic acid, when reacted with isopropyl alcohol, it then forms an ester. These esters are used as ingredients in cosmetics and in body care products. For fatty acids that contain lots of Lauric acid, myristic acid and palmitic acid which are reacted with alcohol will be used as a formulation. The initial process is the separation of impurities using a degasser, then to obtain palmitic acid, namely through the first fractionation process which is expected the distillate product has a purity of 98%, then obtaining oleic acid in the second fractionation process with distillate is expected to have a purity of 85% and the final product is stearic acid which is obtained by the principle of separation using a depitcher tool.
