Abstract
Nikel merupakan logam yang sangat penting dan banyak diaplikasikan pada dunia industri, terutama industri stainless steel. Seiring berkembangnya industri, membuat kebutuhan terhadap logam nikel semakin banyak. Namun, cadangan nikel berupa bijih nikel sulfida yang biasa digunakan pada produksi nikel semakin menipis sehingga penggunaan bijih nikel laterit lebih digencarkan. Berbeda dengan bijih nikel sulfida, bijih nikel laterit memiliki kadar nikel yang lebih rendah dan perlu pengolahan lebih lanjut untuk dapat diaplikasikan dalam dunia industri. Bijih Nikel Laterit yang dibahas kali ini adalah berjenis saprolitik dan dilakukan proses ekstraksi secara pirometalurgi. Proses ekstraksi diawali dengan proses smelting yang akan menghasilkan ferronikel, kemudian proses ekstraksi tersebut dilanjutkan dengan rangkaian proses pemurnian ferronikel yang diawali dengan tahap desulfurisasi yaitu penghilangan unsur pengotor berupa sulfur dan dilanjutkan dengan tahap oksidasi dengan memanfaatkan afinitas unsur impurities terhadap oksigen untuk mengoksidasi impurities yang ada.. Selain itu, pada penelitian jurnal review kali ini akan dibahas juga mengenai laju aliran oksigen pada proses oksidasi dan penambahan flux pada proses desulfurisasi

Nickel is a very important metal and widely applied to the industrial world, especially the stainless steel industry. As the industry develops, the need for nickel is getting higher. However, nickel reserves in the form of nickel sulfide ore commonly used in nickel production are running low so that the use of laterite nickel ore is more intense. Unlike nickel sulfide ore, laterite nickel ore has lower nickel content and needs further processing to be applied in the industrial world. The laterite nickel ore discussed here is a saprolitic type and the extraction process is pyrometallurgy. The extraction process begins with a smelting process that will produce ferronickel, then the extraction process is continued by the ferronickel refining processes that begin with the desulfurization stage that removing impurities in the form of sulfur and followed by an oxidation stage by utilizing the affinity of impurities to oxygen to oxidize existing impurities. In addition, in this review journal research will also discuss the oxygen flow rate in the oxidation process and the addition of flux in the desulfurization process.
