Abstract

Archaeological site in the form of spring with brick structure associated with Majapahit civilization was found in Kesamben Village, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency. The site is exposed at a depth of ± 2 m below the Kelud Mountain lava deposit and has continuous waterways to the east and west. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) method has been conducted to map the site, as it is a non-destructive method and often used for sub-surface archaeological investigation. The GPR survey was conducted using GPR MALÅ GS with 4800 MHz central frequency on 29 trajectories which stretched north-south and east-west inside research area (638456.00E, 9152450.00S - 638606.00E, 9152426.00S and 638535.00E, 9152463.00S - 638526.00E, 9152415.00S). The obtained data was processed using MatGPR R-3.1 with adjust time-zero, background removal, median filter, inverse amplitude decay, subtract mean dewow, K-L filter, suppress dipping features, and Gazdag’s migration. The processed data was modeled in 1-D and 3-D profile to visualize the distribution of the site. 1-D profile of trajectory SB-01 to SB-12 detected an anomaly of the bricks structure indicated by high amplitude, has a dielectric constant value of 3.429-9 and velocity of 0.1-0.162 m / ns located at depths of 0-6 meters . The same anomaly was detected on the SB-13 trajectory at a depth of 0-3 meters. The 3-D result shows the wall thickness of the structure on the east, north, and west sides is around 2 meters, and there is a structure detected in the middle of the cube with dimensions of 15 × 25 meters at a depth of 2-8 meters. The buried Sumberbeji site was built on paleosoil which starts at the depth of 5 meters and buried by ±5 meters thick of pyroclastic deposit.
