Abstract

Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is a cycle with a special working fluid and included in low grade thermal energy. The Mechanical Engineering Department has conducted experimental research on the ORC cycle. On the system, there are 4 main components: evaporator, turbine, pump and condenser. The performance of each component can affect system performance. One of the ways to improve system performance is by increasing condenser performance. Two things that can affect the performance of the condenser include the speed of the cooling fluid and the type of fin material. Condenser analysis in which there is a fin and tube, can be done using the CFD (Computational fluid dynamics) method, which is an easy way to solve equations related to fluid dynamics using a computer.

In this study, fin and tube simulations were carried out on the condenser of the ORC experimental apparatus contained in the Refrigeration Laboratory of the Mechanical Engineering Department ITS using GAMBIT 2.4.6 software for geometric modeling and mesh making, and also FLUENT 18.1 software. Flat fin geometry of staggered tube arrangement with S_T=0,0118 m and S_L=0,0222 m is placed inside the rectangular duct according to the existing component. Heating on the flat fin is done by maintaining the temperature of the wall tube 315 K. The simulation is carried out using two variations, air velocity and type of fin material. Air velocity 1 m/s in laminar flow and 8 m/s in transition flow. Fin material consists of Copper, Aluminum, and Steel. To get the best results, a grid independency test is first performed so that the optimal mesh density is obtained. The data to be analyzed are qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data is in the form of temperature contours on the fin, temperature and velocity contours on the plane between the flat fin. Quantitative data are temperature and velocity values at the points between the tubes, outlet temperature, average fin temperature, and heat flux.

The results obtained from the simulation are in the form of contours, efficiency, and fin effectiveness values. The temperature contours of both the fin and the plane between the fins are increasingly dominated by high-value temperatures along with decreasing air velocity and increasing fin conductivity. It can be seen in pathline belongs to 8 m/s that the wake area occurs wider than 1 m/s. At 1 m/s air velocity, fin efficiency with a variety of material types are copper fin 0.969779, aluminum 0.947237, and steel 0.729207. At 8 m/s air velocity, the fin efficiency with a variety of material types are copper fin 0.981646, aluminum 0.980344, and steel 0.96917. 17,656, and steel 13,59244. At 1 m/s air velocity, fin effectiveness a variety of material types are copper fin 18.076, aluminum 17.656, and steel 13.59244. At 8 m/s air velocity, fin effectiveness with a variety of material types are copper fin 18.297, aluminum 18.27364, and steel 18.06536. The value of effectiveness and efficiency will increase along with increasing air velocity and conductivity value of the fin material.
