Abstract

Ship Resistance is one of the main considerations for determining the ship’s power. Ship Resistance can be controlled by modifying the shape of the hull by modifying its bow, its body, or its stern. Installing interceptor is one of the methods for modifying ship’s stern which lately researched by naval architect and marine engineer. Interceptor is a flat plate that vertically mounted on the ship’s stern. It’s an adjustable device, so its deployment can be controlled corresponding with the ship’s condition. This research is done by CFD simulation using NUMECA FINE MARINE. For this simulation, the depth of the interceptor is 40% of the ship’s boundary layer thickness. Span to depth ratio which used is S/D 7, S/D 11, and S/D 14. Simulation is done with 50% and 100% interceptor deployment. Based on the results, the effective interceptor has span to depth (S/D) ratio 7 with resistance reduction up to 6.66 kN. At higher speed (Fn > 0.6), interceptors with 50% deployment show a good performance.
