Abstract

Joints determination for lightweight and safe automotive structure design is an important factor to observed. The adhesive is one of the considered joints for lightweight structure because it has several advantages. Constant stress distribution and the ability of the adhesive joints to absorb energy during loading are better than conventional joints. The mechanical properties of an adhesive are sensitive to temperature. At high ambient temperature, it significantly affects the mechanical properties of the adhesive joints such as stiffness, strength, and lifetime. The sensitivity of the adhesive joint to temperature is influenced by the glass transition temperature (Tg) or it can be at higher temperatures. On the other hand, the mechanical properties of the adhesive are also sensitive to high strain rate or high deformation caused by impact loads. Meanwhile, there is not much literature discussing the effect of the combination of these two factors on adhesive joints. Therefore it is important to study the mechanical properties of adhesive joints at high temperatures.

This study analyzes the effect of temperature on a 45° scarf adhesive joint. This type of joint, when external loaded, capable to keep the axis of loading aligned with the joint. The type of scarf joint has two types of stress, namely normal stress, and shear stress. That way, choosing a scarf as a type of connection can minimize stress concentrations. These joints have high efficiency in critical loading applications that can be found in the aeronautical and aerospace industries. Besides, the adherend material used in this study is aluminum alloy AISI 6061.

Observation of the response of the adhesive scarf joint to working temperature was carried out using the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) test instrument. The SHPB test tool is used to determine the mechanical properties of the scarf adhesive connection in dynamic loading. The stress-strain response of the test results is to observe the value of young's modulus. Observations will be made at room temperature (RT), 40 ℃, 50 ℃, and 60 ℃ with a strain rate that is kept constant, 856 ±69 s-1. Whereas at a temperature of 70 ℃ it is carried out at a strain rate of 1078±55 s-1. Five specimens will be tested at each temperature variation. Furthermore, young's modulus of the test results will be tested for validation using the paired t-test static method.

This adhesive scarf joint test was conducted to determine the mechanical properties of the material, namely the stiffness to the influence of high temperatures. The value of young's modulus is obtained from pulling the slope of the stress-strain graph from zero to 0.04 of strain. The results obtained show that as the temperature increases, the stiffness of adhesive decreases. A significant decrease occurred at room temperature (RT) up to 40 ℃. It is hoped that the results of this research will be useful in the future as a reference for further observations and as a decision for industry players in designing an adhesive joint.
