Abstract

Zinc air-battery is getting attention because it has many advantages, including having a large energy density, abundant presence, relatively cheap price, and environmentally friendly. One of the most important parts of a zinc-air battery is the cathode, where oxygen reduction occurs. The cathode used must satisfy the requirements of having a large surface area and good catalytic properties. To satisfy these requirements, research has been developed on the use of base metals and their alloys with carbon materials. In this research, graphene synthesis will be carried out as a source of carbon from coconut shell charcoal by modifying the hummer method and the reduction process with citric acid. For non-precious metal sources, Fe3O4 is synthesized from scrap metal using electrochemical methods. Graphene and Fe3O4 will be centrifuged separately and then compiled by electrophoretic deposition method using pulse direct current (PDC) on a nickel foam substrate with time variations of 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 minutes performed at room temperature and using sonication. The results showed that the use of PDC was able to deposit graphene/Fe3O4 composites on the surface of the substrate. The results of electrocatalyst performance testing for cyclic voltammetry curves at room temperature, showed that anodic peaks still formed for all variations of deposition time. Whereas with the use of sonication, the anodic peak can be reduced and the cathodic peak more visible. Cathodic peaks that appear for each temperature variation respectively 1.27; 1.28; 1.24; 1.32 and 1.26 (E/VRHE) with a mass activity of 0.9686 mA/mg in 10 minutes of graphene-like/Fe3O4 composites. In linear polarization curves, graphene-like/Fe3O4 composites obtained using sonication show good electrocatalyst performance for oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution (OER) reactions so that they can satisfy the requirements as electrodes in zinc-air battery.
