Abstract

Wave energy is one of the promising energies to be applied in an archipelago like Indonesia. However, this potential is still not being utilized properly due to the lack of studies on the implementation of the wave energy converter (WEC). Adopting WEC technology from other countries and modifying it for implementation context becomes a more realistic choice. One of the well applied WEC technology is APR WEC, which has a simple construction. This device also has been tested in the Taiwan Strait. Yet, this WEC has a weakness, namely that it is not able to generate electric energy in sea states with a wave frequency of fewer than 3 seconds. If APR WEC can convert the existing wave energy potential in this sea state, it will increase the amount of energy produced. It is this problem that is tried to be answered by DMDS – Oscillating Buoy WEC so that the design can convert wave energy with a wider range. Consequently, it will increase the yield of wave energy on an implementation scale. The solution to solve this problem can be done by increasing the rotation ratio of the mechanical system and reducing the flywheel inertia.
Based on the experimental results, the correct system configuration is obtained so that the model can work in a minimum wave period of fewer than 3 seconds by increasing the rotation ratio to 1:61 and reducing the flywheel inertia to 1/17 of the APR WEC which is the reference for technology adoption. This configuration can produce an average mechanical system efficiency in all variations between 15 – 40% with the best average in code variation C of 40%. Then, the results of the experiment show that the shape of the rectangle buoy is better than the cylindrical buoy in the same variation code with the optimal configuration is C2 which has a lever length of 0.9 m, a shaft distance to MWL of 0.67 m, and a draft of 0.075 m.
Also, the DMDS – Oscillating Buoy WEC model was successful in working continuously and was able to generate electric power in wave conditions with a period of 1.12 s and 0.931 s, which is the result of the minimum scale for the 3 second wave period. If applied on a prototype scale, it is estimated that the DMDS – Oscillating Buoy WEC is capable of producing a maximum electrical power of 246.5 Watts.
The hydrodynamic constant obtained from the simulation based on the Ursell–Tasai method shows valid results. This constant value is used to obtain hydrodynamic parameters in the form of added mass coefficient, damping, and stiffness, which are more dominant influenced by wave frequency and very important in generating output power. For cylindrical buoys, the value of the added mass coefficient is 17.24 –19.44 kg, the damping coefficient is 78.19 – 91.68 kg/s, and the stiffness coefficient is 1384.77 – 1426.37 kg/s2. While for the rectangle buoys, the added mass coefficient is 26.8 – 28.75 kg, the damping coefficient is 68.03 – 96.51 kg/s, and the stiffness coefficient is 1500.93 kg/s2.
