Abstract

==================================================================================================================
Injectable biomaterials as a substitute material for the solution of damaged nucleus pulposus can be synthesized using silicone rubber and poly (vinyl alcohol) polymers because they are biocompatible, swelling and bioadhesive. The addition of radiopaque material is required, so that the material can be detected by x-ray when it is injected into the body. This study used two types of radiopaque materials, namely ZrO2 and BaSO4. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of adding and comparing the addition of two types of radiopaque, namely ZrO2 and BaSO4 on the morphology, physical properties and mechanics of SR/PVA composites. The SR:PVA composition used was 60:40 and with variations in the addition of 0.5, 1 and 1.5% wt of radiopaque material to the composite. The results showed the effect of adding ZrO2 radiopaque material to SR/PVA composites, namely reducing the pore size while BaSO4 increased the pore size. These two composites can increase radiopacity, and can increase the value of compressive strength. This composite has a suitable curing time and can be applied as an injectable composite. The best results were obtained by the SR/PVA/ZrO2 composites with the addition of 1.5% ZrO2 which met the physical properties requirements and had a compressive strength value of 0.789 MPa which was in the range required by the nucleus pulposus in a sitting, standing and lying position.
