Abstract

In the shipping industry, aluminium materials are often used as primary material for ship building. With its own characteristics and advantages making aluminium material to be main choice on building a particular ship such as fishing boat, fast boat and fast patrol, and ect. Welding is one of the main factor in ship building. The imperfect welding with defects can cause fatal damage if no detection to be done and left untreated. The objective of this study is to analyze the detection ability of eddy current testing of crack toe at the non-conductive coated tee joint with variations in depth and crack length In this study, five speciments of aluminium 5083 material were made with the size of 200 mm x 50 mm x 10 mm which were welded with tee joint. Each speciment was given four artificial cracks given variations in depth and crack length. After that, the speciments were coated with non-conductive coating with 200 microns thickness. The results obtained from this study indicate the influence of depth and length variations on crack toe detection. As the crack’s depth and length increases, the resulting of eddy current signal height also increases. In addtion, the calculation of the detection sensitivity and accuracy value is also carried out to determine the detection ability on crack toe with the influence of two variations, that is depth and length variation in welding condtions which was coated by non-conductive coating and the conditons of the weld groove. Sensitivity value of eddy current testing in this study has a value of 100%. Eddy current testing based on crack depth on speciment 5 had the highest detection accuracy, that is 84,82%, while eddy current testing on speciment 3 had the lowest detection accuracy, that is 53,95%. The detection accuracy on the crack length that can be read of each specimen was 77,55% for specimen 1, 94,65% for specimen 2, 94,26% for specimen 3, 94,77% for specimen 4, and 94,74% for specimen 5, respectively.
