Abstract

HY zeolite has been successfully synthesized from Capkala kaolin for the reaction of benzyl acetate formation in this study. Because of the high content of the element Si in Capkala kaolin, around 59%, then the alkaline fusion method was carried out by varying the weight of kaolin/NaOH by 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3. NaY zeolite synthesized stages have been in the manufacture of seed gel and feedstock gel with hydrothermal time variations of 6, 12, 18, and 24 hours at a temperature of 100ºC. The most optimal NaY zeolite synthesis conditions can be seen from the weight ratio of Capkala / NaOH kaolin (1:1) and hydrothermal time for 6 hours. Crystallization time of more than 6 hours indicates the formation of NaP zeolite from the characterization of the results X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The catalytic activity test of acetic acid esterification was carried out on NaY zeolite which had been exchanged cations into HY zeolite with temperature variations of 125, 150, 175, and 200°C for 8 hours. GC-MS analysis results showed the conversion reached 50.26% at a temperature of 175°C.
