Abstract

With the development of technology, artificial neural networks are
increasingly use to do many tasks. For example, such as pattern recognition,
image classification and speech classification. One type of artificial neural
network that is widely used is the Multilayer Perceptron (MLP). In order to
get good results, the MLP architecture must also be chosen correctly. The
architecture consists of the number of hidden layers and the number of
neurons in each hidden layer. The purpose of this final project is to find many
neurons from each MLP hidden layer so that the accuracy can be optimal. In
this final project, the writer uses Genetic Algorithm in the process of finding
the number of neurons from each hidden layer of MLP. To determine the
ability of the Genetic Algorithm to search for the number of neurons, the
authors used data taken from the MNIST Dataset (Modified National Institute
of Standards and Technology). During testing, different crossover rates
(COR) and mutation rates (MR) were used. In this Final Project, Genetic
Algorithm can be used for three to five hidden layers. From the tests that have
been done, the best results are obtained when the Genetic Algorithm uses a
crossover rate (COR) of 0.35 and a mutation rate (MR) of 0.35. The resulting
MLP is MLP with three hidden layers, where the number of neurons in the
first hidden layer is 85, the number of neurons in the second hidden layer is
41, the number of neurons in the third hidden layer is 98, and the accuracy is
98.02%.
