Abstract

Indonesia has 506 endemic bird species and is ranked 4th in the world. However, Indonesia ranks 1st with 170 species of endangered birds. Every level of society must participate in efforts to preserve and conserve endemic birds of Indonesia. Conservation efforts have been made such as protection of the law, birdwatching, captivity and ecotourism, but there is no educational media aimed at specific targets such as cross stitch lover women aged 17-25 years old. Therefore, the authors designed a cross stitch pattern book with the theme of Indonesian endemic birds as an effort to conserve and conserve endemic birds and make cross stitch renewal in the form of modernize guide content, patterns and its implementation in more modern media.
In this design the methods used to obtain endemic bird data are observation, interviews and literature study. Meanwhile, the methods used to obtain cross stitch data are competitor and comparator studies, visual exploration, market research, interviews, prototyping and sampling. The data obtained will then be summarized into a design concept and appropriate book content.
It is hoped that the design of this book will become a new educational medium about endemic Indonesian birds with a special target audience, cross stitch lover women aged 17-25 years old. The design concept is “Modern Cross-Stitch: Birds of Indonesia” which introduces the diversity and beauty of Indonesia's endemic birds through its application with cross stitch patterns on target audience's favorite DIY projects. It is hoped that the cross-stitch pattern with thematic theme of Indonesian endemic birds can increase the number of cross-stitch patterns reference on the market. In addition, the renewal of the implementation media on a more modern DIY project can create new trends and make cross stitch embroidery more attractive to this segment.
