Abstract

Komposit UP/VE/CF/SiC 12% memenuhi standar uji tembak NIJ Level II-A.

Body armor has made of metal material that has high strength and high density. So that, a low-density material has developed, namely a polymer composite material. The blend polymer of unsaturated polyester/vinyl ester (UP/VE) has high strength and low density. Carbon fiber (CF) has high strength and is suitable as a reinforcement for polymer composites. Carbon fiber composites have high strength. However, the strength of carbon fiber composites can be increased by the addition of particle reinforcement. SiC particles have high strength and hardness This study studied the effect of SiC particles on UP/VE/CF/SiC composites with variations of SiC 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16% wt. The hybrid composites material was characterized by SEM, FTIR, tensile testing, hardness testing, density testing, and ballistic testing. The test results showed that the presence of SiC affects the morphology, bonding, and mechanical properties. Silicon carbide improves mechanical properties. Optimum result was the addition of 12% with tensile strength 323,08 MPa ,young’s modulus 3,91 GPa,elongation 14,47%,hardness 86,3 shore d,and density 1,50 gr/cm3. In the ballistic test, the penetration depth of the bullet was 4.3 mm. The composite UP/VE/CF/SiC 12% fulfilled the standard NIJ Level II-A ballistic test for body armor.
