Abstract

Currently, the fossil fuels that meet 80% of the world's energy needs have limitations and will eventually run out. Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) can be a solution to this problem because of its high efficiency and environmental friendliness. However, there are several obstacles, such as performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness, so the development of Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEA) which is the place where electrochemical reactions occur must be optimized. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of changes in hot press pressure on the morphology and electrochemical performance of fuel cells during the decal transfer process. The method used in this study is MEA fabrication with variations in hot press pressure of 5, 6, and 7 MPa. Based on the SEM results, it was found that the effect of pressure on morphology was that the porosity continued to decrease linearly with the addition of hot press pressure. The morphology formed for samples 5, 6, and 7 MPa is a typical carbon structure consisting of agglomerated primary carbon particles with a diameter of 58-61 nm, and pores that are randomly distributed. Based on the results of electrochemical performance testing, it was found that the fuel cell with a pressure variation of 6 MPa is the sample that has the
xbest performance among other variations, which has a power density of 8.21 mW/cm2 and the smallest RTotal of 101.5 ohms.
