Abstract
Pada penelitian ini, telah berhasil dibuat lapisan silika hidrofobik pada permukaan plat baja dengan menggunakan campuran antara pasir silika alam dan prekursor MTMS (Methyltrimethoxysilane). Variasi yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah variasi volume dari prekursor MTMS, sedangkan silika dari pasir alam dibuat tetap yaitu sebanyak 1 gram. Serbuk silika yang telah disintesis kemudian dicampurkan dengan cat kapal baja dan diaplikasikan pada permukaan baja sebagai topcoat. Variasi sampel yang dicampurkan ke dalam topcoat diantaranya adalah sampel 1 (tanpa serbuk silika); sampel 2 (9,5 ml MTMS); sampel 3 (19 ml MTMS); sampel 4 (28,5 ml MTMS); sampel 5 (38 ml MTMS). Kemudian dilakukan karakterisasi Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) dan Water Contact Analysis (WCA) pada permukaan baja. Hasil karakterisasi menunjukkan bahwa adanya penambahan silika menghasilkan peningkatan terhadap kekasaran permukaan dan sudut kontak air sehingga permukaan baja memiliki sifat hidrofobik yang baik. Sudut kontak air tertinggi yang diperoleh pada penelitian ini adalah sebesar 108º menggunakan air tawar dan 109º menggunakan air laut.

In this research, hydrophobic silica coating of steel surface has been successfully made using a mixture of natural silica sand and precursor MTMS (Methyltrimethoxysilane).The variation of the research was variation of volume precursor MTMS, while the silica from the sand was fixed (1 gram). Variations of the volume precursor MTMS used were 9,5 ; 19 ; 28,5 and 38 ml. Silica was mixed with steel marine paint and coated as a topcoat on the steel surface.Variations of samples mixed into the topcoat include sample 1 (without silica powder), sample 2 (9,5 ml MTMS), sample 3 (19 ml MTMS), sample 4 (28,5 ml MTMS) and sample 5 (38 ml MTMS). Then the characterization of Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and Water Contact Analysis (WCA) on the steel surface was carried out. The characterization results showed the addition of silica powder on the topcoat increase surface roughness and water contact angle, so that the steel surface has good hydrophobic properties. The highest water contact angle obtained in this research was 108º by freshwater and 109º by seawater.
