Abstract

The development of piston components using aluminum alloys is an innovation in the automotive field. However, to achieve the appropriate mechanical properties, it is necessary to do heat treatment in the form of artificial aging. This heat treatment is influenced by temperature and holding time. The aging time that is too long or the aging temperature that is too high, will results in decrease in the hardness value (overaged). This study aims to analyze the effect of artificial aging on changes in hardness and microstructure of aluminum 336 alloy. After casting aluminum 336 at temperature of 850oC, the solution was heat-treated at temperature of 520oC for 8 hours followed by quenching with air media. Then artificial aging with temperature variations of 130oC, 170oC, 210oC and variations of holding time 24, 27, 30 hours. Furthermore, hardness, metallographic, XRD, and SEM tests were carried out. The test results show that artificial aging at each aging temperature variation during the holding time of 24, 27, and 30 hours can form more incoherent β'-Mg2Si precipitates due to the more irregular crystal structure to the aluminum matrix and affect the decrease in hardness values with hardness at temperature of 170oC and 210oC fulfilled Mahle M124 piston hardness standard in the range of 90 HB - 130 HB.
