Abstract

Indonesia as an archipelagic country has a fairly large practical potential of ocean current energy, which is 17.9 GW. The Darrieus turbine, which is one of the vertical axis turbines, has poor capability of self-starting, especially in low-speed ocean currents, such as in Indonesia. In this study, a numerical study was conducted to find out how the effect of flow disturbance distance settings in the form of a cylinder on the self-start capability of the turbine. The research was conducted using two-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics method using Ansys Fluent 2020 R2 Student Version software. The variation used is the horizontal distance between the center of the turbine and the center of the cylinder, namely x/D 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5. In addition, as a comparison, variations were also carried out with two different cylinder diameters, namely ds/D 0.3 and 0.5. From the simulation, it is found that the placement of the flow disturbance with a distance of x/D 0.0 gives the largest increase in Cp, which is 28.4% compared to the conventional Darrieus turbine.
