Abstract

The fluid flow of water along the piping system experiences losses during the water flow process, this is known as head loss. Head loss is caused by several factors, including: frictional force of flow against the pipe wall, changes in flow direction, and changes in flow momentum. The piping installation in this study resembles a piping installation at a pump station consisting of: diffuser, elbow, t-junction, and multiple inlet. The variations given are variations in the size of the branch diameter and variations in operation. This study aims to determine the effect of the diameter of the branching pipe and the effect of the operating pattern on the pressure drop, total pressure, and velocity. The research was carried out by simulation which was completed by numerical calculations and validated by analytical calculations. Domain creation and meshing are done with ANSYS GAMBIT 2.4 software, while the simulation process uses ANSYS FLUENT 19.2 software. Variations in the size of the branch diameter are: 0.3 m, 0.4 m, and 0.5 m. Variations in operating patterns in the form of the operation of four pumps or three pumps with a same flow rate at outlet. In the operation of four pumps the velocity at the inlet is set at 4.65 m/s while for three pumps it is 6.2 m/s. Based on the simulation results, it is found that the largest total pressure occurs in the 0.5 m model, and the smallest in the 0.4 mm model. While in the simulation of operating pattern variations, the operation of four pumps produces a smaller total pressure drop than the operation of three pumps.
