Abstract

Child development is fundamentally tied to their surroundings. This tie formed into their sense of place capability which often led to a lifelong connection between their identity and perspective. However, most children research are focused in formal environment where child-friendly initiatives or designs took place, more often with an intended sense of place. Therefore, this study investigates how children from rail-side kampung engage activities and how they develop a sense of place within their neighborhood through field observation, memory sketch, and follow-up interviews. This study does not test the global child-friendly initiative frameworks but rather aims to comprehend children sense of place in marginalized context and discusses it in housing and settlement context on a neighborhood scale. Rail-side kampung is particularly chosen as the study case area for its different sensory condition compared to other kampung settlement in general. Sketches and interviews sourced from 16 selected participants led to connections between children’s age, their comprehension of the given prompt, and sense of place ability by the depth of the story in their sketches. Their stories indicate that play is not defined by the existence of specific play objects alone and play activity has more flexible meaning. Field observation of children playing in between railway tracks confirms that children in rail-side kampung have the awareness towards the environment. The presence of adults or their properties invoke children’s preference of the place. The train is no longer a complete risk factor and infused as an element within their play activity that shaped a particular way to navigate, either individually or as a group, and contributes to a richer experience. Therefore, it is suggested that a child-friendly settlement offers abundant place experience and children's sense of place, which manifested in environmental affordance and a controlled risk factor of place.
