Abstract

Mathematical word problems are problems that have a high complexity due
to the many competencies in them. A problem can be solved with a good
understanding of language, translation into the correct mathematical form, and the
use of appropriate operations. However, of all the competencies available,
elementary school students will only get the right answer if the final results are done
right. So that the competencies of these students cannot be detected in detail. For
that, we need a system that can detect elementary school students numeracy
competencies through the results of math story problems. This system will not only
assess the student's final answers but will also examine each stage.
This study aims to build a system that can gradually check student answers
so that student competence will be detected in working on math story problems.
The method used is using Random Forest to classify operations in story problems
and map them into a tree. To retrieve student answer data, OCR used which includes
the Tesseract and OpenCV libraries as digital image processors. Then, a tree of
student answers also made so that each stage of the tree from the classification
results will be compared with the tree of students' answers. As a result, the Random
Forest classification reached 84% for the classification using 4 classes. Then, for
classification using 5 classes, the system results issued an accuracy of 68%. In
addition to the classification results that have been obtained, it is also known that
of the 32 data that have been tested on tree matching, only 25 data have been
successfully matched correctly. Thus, for tree matching, the accuracy is 78%. In
conclusion, the system created has successfully carried out automatic assessments
of math story problems and matched them with student answers through pictures.
