Abstract

Data publication from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that every year, around 1.35 million people who die due to traffic accidents, one of the many causes is because of driver drowsiness. To reduce number of accidents, we need a sleep detection system that can be applied and able to prevent accidents in the future.
In this undergraduate thesis, author propose a real-time drowsiness detection system using deep learning approach. The proposed methodology uses a new version of lightweight deep neural network namely MobileNetV3, along with the Single-Shot Multibox Detector (SSD) framework. MobileNetV3-SSD produces an object detection framework that able to detect and localize multiple objects in a single image. To detect drowsiness, this framework is trained to detect open eyes, and closed eyes, where open eyes and closed eyes are classified as two separate objects. The results of this research using MobileNetV3-SSD showed a mAP score of 0.878 for detecting faces, eyes open, and eyes closed and was able to achieve an average FPS of 15 on realtime video.
