Abstract

The heat exchanger is one of the important components of plants such as power plants, cooling systems, automotive and solar water heaters, and others. This heat exchanger involves two or more process fluids that can exchange heat between two or more streams but are prone to leakage. For this reason, optimization is carried out to optimize the heat transfer that occurs in the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger used for optimization uses a genetic algorithm on a helical baffle heat exchanger. In the optimizations of this heat exchanger using a genetic algorithm method that requires objective functions, constraint functions, optimized variables, number of iterations, and others to achieve the desired fitness. So, in optimizing the optimum heat transfer coefficient, it is necessary to optimize the variable value by varying the baffle angle and the distance of baffles. The optimization results that have been validated by HTRI show the overall heat transfer coefficient is 29.17 W/m2K with the optimized variable being 0.22 m for the distance of baffles and 79.81o for the optimum baffle angle. So, that there is a difference of 0.29 from before the heat exchanger was optimized, and an increase of 1% from before the optimization, which was validated by HTRI.
