Abstract

Multichannel microfluidic paper is an alternative device that can be used for reliable and affordable simultaneous separation of blood plasma. In this study, a multichannel paper-based microfluidic device was developed which was integrated with drop-casted ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles and the geometries were modified and analyzed using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach. Geometry was modified by varying the number, the width, and the length of the channel in separation zone. The results of simulations after validation with the experimental data reveals that the time required for the blood plasma separation is proportional to the number of channels and the length of the separation channels. However, it is inversely proportional to the width of the separation channel. The simulation results suggest that the optimum geometry of microfluidic paper should bear 4 separation channels with 3 mm wide and 1 mm long. However, the experimental results show that the the best geometry of the separation channel should be 3 mm long and 1 mm wide to be able to separate blood plasma in 15.3 seconds.
