Abstract

Vertical housing, which is one of the efforts to overcome the problem of dense population settlements and the affordability of housing access for low-income people, in fact still often causes negative impacts, including for children. Some of the dangers that can be experienced by children are cognitive & behavioral development disorders, natural deficit disorders, to physical and mental vulnerabilities. On the other hand, childhood stages has a big role in mental, physical, and social development.
The problem to be solved is the design of vertical housing that considers the perception and way children interact with the environment. To support the concept of understanding children in the design of an apartment, a phenomenological approach is used within the scope of the children's experience. The exploratory thinking carried out produces domain knowledge about the children's experience which is dominated by play activities. Meanwhile, the play activity itself has several types of classification according to the stage of children's development. This domain knowledge is also translated into architectural language using the domain transfer method to explore design issues to be worked on. Meanwhile, the narrative design method is used to build the atmosphere and quality of the space to be produced, supported by a phenomenological approach that is chosen to understand aspects of children's experiences and perceptions. The solution is presented through architectural elements of building mass arrangement which results in corridor design arrangement with many surprising spaces. On the 2nd and 3rd floors, shared spaces are divided into 3 types of spaces with different characters for children, teenagers, and adults. Final design is able to provide an environment with lots of space for children to explore and bringing familiar characters with the morphology of low-income housing.
