Abstract

Microalgae dewatering is one of the important steps in the process of converting bioethanol from microalgae. In this study, the performance of PVDF/LiCl membrane was improved by spray coating method using carbon-zeolite composite (ZCC) for Dunaliella salina microalgae dewatering. The coating of ZCC on the membrane surface can increase the selectivity (% rejection) and permeability (flux) of the PVDF/LiCl membrane. ZCC coating on the membrane surface was carried out by spray coating method with ZCC dispersion solution with variation of 0.05%; 0.10%; and 0.15% (w/w) dispersion solution. The results of microalgae dewatering showed that the optimum increase occurred in the membrane with 0.10% ZCC coating. ZCC coating on the surface of PVDF/LiCl membrane can increase its selectivity to 100% microalgae rejection from without ZCC coating with a selectivity of 97.64%. This membrane has a water flux value (without microalgae) 2 times higher from PVDF/LiCl membrane with increase value from 236 L.m-2.h-1.bar-1 to 489.2 L.m-2.h-1.bar-1. The value of water flux in microalgae dewatering also increased from 148.53 L.m-2.h-1.bar-1 to 208.48 L.m-2.h-1.bar-1.
