Abstract

=======================================================================================================
Synthesis and characterization of Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP) from starch chitosan with the addition of glutaraldehyde has been carried out. SAP synthesis was carried out by varying the concentration of chitosan and starch, each 0.5%-2% with the addition of 25% glutaraldehyde. Determination of the optimum conditions for SAP was carried out by testing the absorption capacity with distilled water and 0.9% NaCl as well as testing the degree of degradation in the soil. The SAP characterization was taken from the optimum conditions using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The optimum composition of SAP is at a concentration of 0.5% chitosan and 2% starchwith the results that the absorption capacity of distilled water and 0.9% NaCl were 75.4% and 103.79%, respectively. The FTIR test did not show any interaction between starch and glutaraldehyde or chitosan, so it was estimated that only chitosan and glutaraldehyde reacted to form crosslinked SAP.
