Abstract

Biomarker analysis of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons JT-1B coal has been carried out from the Ngrayong Formation in the North East Java Basin. The analysis was carried out by the method of soxhlet extraction, fractionation and identification of biomarker structures using gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The biomarker analysis aims to obtain information related to the source of organic matter input, maturity level, paleoenviromental, and potential sources of coal organic matter. The identification results indicate the presence of 17β(H)-22,29,30-trisnorhopane, 17β(H),21β(H)-homohopane, and the C31αβ 22S/(22S+22R) ratio value is 0,27 suggest that sample has a relatively low maturity. The identification of the compound C31 homohopane indicated an oxic depositional environment. The abundance of pentacyclic triterpenoid aromatic groups, high CPI (1.91), OEP (2.07) and n-C31/n-C19 (18.86) ratios, as well as low Paq (0.22 ) and wax index (0.31) ratio indicate the major contribution of the source of organic matter derived from terrestrial higher plants (vitrinite) of Angiosperms. The presence of identified biomarkers indicates that the JT-1B coal of the Ngrayong Formation is a type III kerogen that has a tendency to produce gas (gas prone).
