Abstract

The LPD ship or what is called the Landing Platform Dock is a ship used for the need to move land personnel by sea. Diesel engines are widely used as a ship's main propulsion system, with the addition of an auxiliary engine as its auxiliary power. These ships are usually designed to carry troops by sea and have the ability to carry air power by sea, one of which is usually transported by helicopter. The Landing Dock ship also has the task of carrying out international diplomatic missions.
Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger is one type of heat exchanger (energy transfer) which is widely used in industry. The high flow rate and heat transfer rate are the advantages of this tool. Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger consists of an arrangement of pipes (tubes) that are placed in a shell (tube/shell). Heat transfer occurs when the fluid entering through the inlet shell touches a tube (pipe) containing a different fluid. The hot water system which is located in the domestic system is innovated by making several changes. Among them can take advantage of exhaust gas from the ship itself which comes from the main engine and auxiliary engine. Instead of personnel, the ship certainly has a need for clean water and one type is hot water. The need for hot water in this case is very important because the ship will pass through subtropical waters whose temperatures can reach up to 5oC.
Then in this final project, innovation is carried out using a calorifier. The function of this calorifier is to be able to utilize the exhaust gas from the ship's auxiliary engine itself by utilizing a heat exchanger system with the aim of being able to warm up. The main objective of this final project is to design the calorifier tank on board the LPD (Landing Platform Dock). The method used by the author in this final project is manual calculation and design using HTRI software and then a comparison is made to find out the results of the two designs. From the comparison results, the manual calculation results for the heat transfer area of 1223.4 ft2 and for the HTRI software heat transfer area is 1142.6 ft2. For the total heat transfer coefficient from manual calculations, it is found that 1.04799 Btu/ft2.hr.F and from HTRI software is 4.94 Btu/ft2.hr.F. For the LMTD in the manual calculation, it is 73,038 F and for the HTRI software 72.5 F.
