Abstract

Slurry is a mixture of liquid and solid particles, some of which cannot be
dissolved. This mixture can be pumped, which is a process commonly used as a
convenient way to handle solids. Mining, dredging, sand and gravel extraction
industries and other industries use mud pumps as a cost-effective solution for
transporting solids. Slurry pump is a special type of pump that can handle mud. Unlike
water pumps, slurry pumps are prone to wear and tear and are more durable. There are
several types of slurry pumps, the most common are: centrifugal pumps. The
centrifugal slurry pump, which can provide high capacity with a limited head, is mainly
used to pump solids with a concentration of less than 70% (weight) through the
pipeline. The centrifugal slurry pump can be vertical, horizontal, or submersible. Due to
the needs of the industry, the optimization of the use of mechanical concepts has
recently been studied to manufacture higher-efficiency pumps with higher heads. Of all
the components of the pump, the impeller has the greatest impact on performance
because the fluid flow in the pump generates energy through it. To improve the
performance of the centrifugal pump, optimization of the impeller and design of the
volute were carried out. Therefore, a lot of research has been conducted on the design
of various types of centrifugal pumps. Therefore, accurate analysis is essential to
optimize the variables that affect pump performance. Design parameters from vane
plane development for impeller design were selected and effect of the design
parameters on the performance of the pump was analyzed using CFD and FEM to
optimized impeller. The final results obtained for CFD are pressure and head then will
be calculated to get the efficiency and from the FEM are the impeller blade, shaft, and
volute casing that have a maximum Von Mises stress which resulted with the tensile
strength of the materials. The final result with the best performance were obtained with
pump using closed impeller when operate with sea water with efficiency of 58% at
1450 rpm. When operated with sand slurry, the best performance were obtained with
pump using 5 blade, 65% solids concentration with efficiency of 24% at 850 RPM and
4 blade, 55% solids concentration with efficiency 21% at 850 RPM. Maximum stress
for the materials used in the centrifugal pump when in operation with sea water
obtained 1.4e+06
