Abstract

The dwindling availability of fossil fuels due to increasing use is one of the reasons for using alternative fuels in the form of biodiesel fuel. However, biodiesel has disadvantages such as higher density, lower calorific value, high fuel consumption, and high nitrogen oxides (NOx) compared to diesel. To correct this deficiency, it can be done by increasing the cetane value of the fuel by adding a bio additive in the form of citronella oil. The purpose of this final project is to determine the characteristics of biodiesel fuel after adding citronella oil, and to determine the effect of adding citronella oil to engine performance and emissions. This research was conducted experimentally by adding citronella oil with composition variations of 0.5%, 0.75%, 1%, 1.25%, and 1.5% of the volume of biodiesel fuel. The fuel was tested on a Yanmar TF85-MH diesel engine. From the test results, the cetane number increased with each addition of citronella oil composition, with the highest cetane number in B30+SW 1.5% fuel at 70.8, the value increased by 25,9% when compared to the B30 cetane number. For the result, the highest calorific value at B30+SW 1.5% increased by 2.7% when compared to the calorific value of B30. The results of the performance test on the diesel engine showed an increase in performance in the form of power, torque, and BMEP when compared to B30 fuel. However, the addition of citronella oil composition resulted in lower performance and the SFOC value decreased. The lowest NOx emission results at 2000 RPM rotation with the largest load produced by fuel that has been added with 1.5% citronella oil with a decrease of 21.6% when compared to the base fuel.
