Abstract

Clean water is one of the basic human needs that must be fulfilled, but there are still many Indonesians who do not have this access. The use of reverse osmosis systems for desalination of water will undoubtedly be of great help to supply the availability of clean water. In the process, the reverse osmosis system requires a quite large amount of power to drive its components. This will be a problem for regions with insufficient electricity supply. This problem can be solved by using photovoltaics as a power plant. Indonesia's geographic location, which is very close to the equator, is one of the considerations for using photovoltaics compared to other renewable energy generators. According to previous research, the use of a hybrid between photovoltaic and solar thermal (PVT) can increase the efficiency of the entire system. This is because solar thermal collectors can increase freshwater production by heating brackish water and increasing photovoltaic efficiency by cooling it. This study aims to design and analyze the performance differences of the hybrid PVT BWRO system with and without a solar collector. The type of solar collector used is copper pipes arranged in series with backsheet-attached type and 7 meters length. The research results show that the use of solar collectors has a significant effect on the performance of the hybrid PVT BWRO system. The use of solar collectors can increase the average temperature of feed water by 18.34°C. However, with the increase in temperature, the average TDS of the product water will also increase by 73 ppm from 162 ppm to 235 ppm and cause a decrease in average salt rejection by 3.26% from 92.88% to 89.62 %. The use of solar collectors can increase the volume of product water by 14%, from 19.9 liters to 22.7 liters. On the other hand, solar collectors can increase the average photovoltaic efficiency by 0.25% from 13.24% to 13.49% due to the decreased photovoltaic surface temperature. In addition to increasing photovoltaic efficiency, solar collectors can also reduce the average power consumption of the booster pump by 39% or 5.89 Watts from 14.95 Watts to 9.06 Watts due to a decrease in working pressure of 10,39 psi.
