Abstract

The number of imports of magnetic materials for the production needs of electric motor components in Indonesia is quite high, in contrast to other countries such as Japan and China which are already able to produce their own magnetic materials. One of the actions that can be taken by the Indonesian state to reduce the number of imports is to utilize its natural wealth, namely natural iron sand as the basic material for the formation of magnetic materials. One of the magnetic materials is iron nitride which can be synthesized from mineral content in iron sand using several methods, one of which is gas nitriding method. The iron nitride phase formed is influenced by temperature and the length of holding time during the nitriding process. Iron sand contains magnetic minerals such as magnetite (Fe3O4), and hematite (α-Fe2O3) as the main minerals.
In this study, hematite (α-Fe2O3) was used as a result of the oxidation of magnetite material that had gone through the coprecipitation process. This hematite powder material will be synthesized into iron nitride or Fe-N powder using gas nitriding or gas nitriding methods. Iron Nitride (Fe-N) has several types of phases that can be formed at different temperatures. The gas nitriding process was carried out with Fe2O3 powder which was flowed with ammonia gas (NH3) at a pressure of 0.03 MPa and a flow rate of 150 mL/min. The temperature variations used are 6000C, 6250C, and 6500C with a holding time of 2 hours and 4 hours. The results of the Fe-N synthesis were then characterized using XRD to analyse the formation and composition of the phases that occurred of the content.
The iron nitride phase formed from the results of this study is Fe3N at a holding time variation of 2 hours for each temperature variation of 600oC, 625oC, and 650oC with the remaining Fe2O3 from the previous process and Fe3O4 resulting from the reduction of Fe2O3. Each of the Fe3N compositions formed decreased with each increase in temperature, namely 17.113%wt, 13.954%wt, and 7.494%wt respectively. This happened because in the variation of holding time of 2 hours, more Fe2O3 was reduced to Fe3O4 compared to the iron nitride phase as evidenced by the increasing content of Fe3O4 with each increase in temperature. At a holding time variation of 4 hours, the iron nitride phases formed were Fe3N and Fe4N with no remaining Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 in their contents for each temperature variation of 600oC and 625oC. The Fe3N content formed was 80.361%wt and 78.842%wt, while the Fe4N content formed was 19.639%wt and 21.157%wt respectively with increasing temperature. It can be seen that in the 4-hour variation, Fe3N content decreased, while Fe4N increased with increasing temperature in the nitriding process.
