Abstract

There are many components located on a ship. In the process of sailing ships, synergy between components is needed with each other. Bolts are one of the important components in the ship because the bolt itself will combine other components in the ship. But it is very unfortunate that there are many incidents where the bolts often crack when the ship is operating. When the bolt cracks, the quality of the ship will decrease. With the decline in the quality of the ship will increase the risk of accidents. Therefore, services are needed to repair the ship. This study aims to make it easier for technicians to find cracks in bolts that have cracked during operation. The bolts used are carbon steel bolts with diameters of 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 14 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm, 20 mm. The artificial cracks given to each bolt amounted to two cracks at the base of the bolt and at the screw thread. The probe used is 6 mm in diameter with a frequency of 10 MHz. The results of this study indicate that this ultrasonic testing immersion test tool can detect cracks in bolts with diameters of 10 mm, 12 mm, 14 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm, and 20 mm. The 8 mm bolt could not be detected because the diameter of the bolt is too small so that the emitted wave is not perfect.By comparing the results and technical testing of the immersion and contact methods, this study shows that the immersion method is more suitable for bolt testing.
