Abstract

Fabrication of chitosan/k-carrageenan/mPTA (Cs/k-Car/mPTA) electrolyte membrane has been successfully carried out using the phase inversion method. The purpose of this study was to determine the performance of the electrolyte membrane composite to find its potential in DMFC applications. The composite membrane material was fabricated from dual-matrices of chitosan/k-carrageenan and mPTA filler where this filler was synthesized specifically for membrane fabrication for DMFC. Characterization of the filler was carried out using FTIR, XRD, N2 Adsorption-Desorption Isotherm, and PSA. Variations in the composition of the mPTA selected were as follows: 0.05% (Cs/k-Car/mPTA-1), 0.10% (Cs/k-Car/mPTA-2), 0.15% (Cs/k- Car/mPTA-3), 0.20% (Cs/k-Car/mPTA-4), and 0.25% (Cs/k-Car/mPTA-5). The characterization of the membranes was the FTIR test to confirm the functional groups involved, and the methanol permeability test and proton conductivity test to confirm their conformity with the main properties of the DMFC membrane. The results obtained are that the optimum electrolyte membrane is the Cs/k-Car/mPTA-4 variant which has the lowest methanol permeability of 7.64 x 10-6 cm2.s-1 and the highest proton conductivity of 12 x 10-3 S.cm-1. The FTIR test results for the CS/k-Car/mPTA-4 membrane showed that there was an electrostatic interaction between the mPTA filler and the membrane matrix.
