Abstract

The demand for electrical energy in the world will increase over time. One of the suppliers of electrical energy comes from nuclear power plants with uranium fuel, but the more it is used, the less uranium reserves on earth will start, so people are starting to look for other alternative fuels, namely using thorium. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of adding SiO2 flux in the monazite sand smelting process using the electric arc furnace method on the compounds formed in the product, the composition of the main compounds, the recovery value of the main compound and the grade of ThO2. Smelting uses an electrical energy source with a current of 60A and a voltage of 40 volts at a temperature of 18500C for 3 minutes. The main sample of the smelting process in the form of monazite sand added with CaCO3 as an additive, carbon as the main reducing agent and SiO2 as a flux with variations in the addition of flux mass 0%, 9%, 18% and 27%. The smelting product was characterized by XRD and XRF testing. In the smelting results, compounds such as perovskite (CaTiO3), ilmenite (FeTiO3), and ferrous-pseudobrookite (FeTi2O5) and fayalite (Fe2SiO4) formed in all variations of SiO2 mass addition of 0%, 9%, 18% and 27%. And calcium-orthosilicate (Ca2SiO4) compound was formed at a variation of 27%. The addition of flux has an impact on the main compound such as Fe2O3 having the lowest content (2.77%) and the lowest recovery (9.8%) at a variation of 9%, TiO2 compound has the highest content (51.8%) and the highest recovery value (62, 2%) at 9% variation, the addition of SiO2 flux was not effective to remove TiO2 content. In general, the smelting process increases the ThO2 content in monazite sand with the highest concentration (0.46%) and the highest recovery value (90.2%) at a variation of 9%.
