Abstract

Railway is one of the popular modes of public transportation in Indonesia.
However, there have been conditions where the length of the platform does not
cover the entire length of the railway coach, so access to get in and out the railway
coach must be added with tools such as staircase. Condition of the staircase that is
currently available are large and heavy, so it takes time to adjust the position of the
staircase right at the door of the railway coach. Based on the survey of train
passengers, it is known that 34% of the respondents stated that the staircase for
access to in and out the railway coach is not comfortable to use, besides that there
are 32.1% of the respondents stated that the staircase for access to go in and out the
carriage is not adequate in terms of number and physical condition. The integration
of the redesign process with the DFM approach and ergonomics aspects, can
produce a staircase design that is not only according to the needs of users and KAI
but also considers convenience and minimizes manufacturing costs. The new
staircase design considers the needs of both parties using multi-layer QFD analysis.
Both parties agreed that the most important technical response was the new
staircase design, followed by conformity with passenger anthropometry. So, the
new staircase design considers the dimensions of the human body in determining
the size of some components. In addition, the new ladder is equipped with foldable,
adjustable, and lightweight features. The new ladder weighs 19,848 kg lighter than
the current ladder. Meanwhile, in terms of production costs, the new ladder requires
$10.65 cheaper production cost than the current ladder. Thus, the new ladder
deserves to be considered by KAI.
