Abstract

One of the transmission systems that is widely used is mechanical coupling. However, there are several problems that are concern to the use of mechanical couplings including high noise, vibration, and wear due to friction from the contact between the surfaces of the clutch rotor which causes a low lifetime. Magnetic coupling can be a solution for transmission systems that prioritize low noise, minimal vibration, and high lifetime due to its non-mechanical contact but requires a large torque density. Because its ability to produce torque density is still low, an analysis of the effect of variations in the number of pole-pairs with constant magnetic volume and air-gap variations on the torque generated from the radial magnetic non-permanent coupling model in perfect position or with the influence of angular misalignment is carried out using the simulation method.
Three dimentional modelling of radial magnetic non-permanent coupling is carried out based on the availability of magnets on the market namely by using neodymium magnets in the form of blocks, then modeling using CAD software. The 3D model that has been created is imported into FEM software for simulation. Simulations were carried out with four variations of the number of pole-pairs (14, 16, 18, and 20 pole-pairs) with the magnetic volume considered constant and three variations of the air-gap (1, 1.5, and 2 mm) with variations in angular misalignments (0.5°, 1°, and 1.5°) in an air-gap of 2 mm. Then, transient analysis was performed to obtain the maximum torque on the inner rotor radial magnetic non-permanent coupling. The results obtained in the form of maximum torque at 1 mm air-gap variation of 3.944 Nm at 14 pole-pairs, 4.445 Nm at 16 pole-pairs, 5.645 Nm at 18 pole-pairs, and 6.150 Nm at 20 pole-pairs indicate that the more number of poles with the thickness of the poles is decreasing and with a constant magnetic volume, the maximum torque that can be transmitted continues to increase where the number of poles that produces the largest maximum torque is 20 pole-pairs. From these results, it can be seen that the number of poles has a significant effect compared to the thickness of the poles on the maximum torque value in the radial magnetic non-permanent coupling.
The results of research which are also in the form of maximum torque at variations of 20 pole-pairs of 5.622 Nm at 2 mm air-gap, 5.905 Nm at 1.5 mm air-gap, and 6.150 Nm at 1 mm air-gap indicate that the smaller the air-gap between poles on the rotor causes the maximum torque to be transmitted to be greater in the radial magnetic non-permanent coupling where the air-gap that produces the largest maximum torque is at 1 mm. The results of research with the effect of angular misalignment obtained maximum torque at variations of 20 pole-pairs of 5.558 Nm at 0.5° angular misalignment, 5.530 Nm at 1° angular misalignment, and 5.478 Nm at 1.5° angular misalignment indicating that the greater the angular misalignment between the two rotors causes the maximum torque to be transmitted to be smaller with a relatively small difference in value where the angular misalignment that produces the lowest maximum torque is at an angle of 1.5°.
