Abstract

Battery is one of the most important components of an electric vehicle that should be safe. Battery’s safety is an important factor when designing an electric vehicle, because damage to the battery could trigger an explosion. Therefore, the battery pack’s case should be strong enough to restrain external load that may damage the internal component. To increase the battery pack’s structure strength, an adhesive layer is applied. The adhesive is chosen due to the capability to absorb collision energy.
This research purpose is to analyse the effect of adhesive’s thickness to restrain battery pack’s case deformation when an impact load is applied and to evaluate the battery pack’s safety. The adhesive types are 5320-1 resin epoxy, resin epoxy, and polyurethane with the thickness variations are 0.1 mm, 0.2 mm and 0.3 mm. Finite element model refers to SAE J2464 standard as a standard for battery pack safety testing. The results from finite element simulation are total deformation and equivalent stress. The battery pack’s structure deformation toward the battery cell and the capability of the structure to absorb the collision energy will be observed from the obtained simulation results. From these results, it is hoped that it can provide recommendations for a good combination of material types and adhesive layer thickness to reduce the deformation of the battery pack casing.
The results obtained from this test indicate that the design of the battery pack casing is still in a safe condition and the addition of an adhesive layer does not have a significant effect in resisting the deformation of the battery pack structure. The type of material and adhesive thickness that has the best results is 5320-1 epoxy resin with a thickness of 0.1 mm with a deformation of 11.507 mm and an energy absorption of 19614 MPa.
