Abstract

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one type of polymer that is widely used as packaging products, as a result millions of PET bottles are disposed as waste every day. The serious environmental problem of non-biodegradable PET waste is a challenge to exploit. This PET plastic bottle waste has the potential to be used as a thin layer membrane used for gas separation. In this study, a PET-Pebax/Zeolite-NaY membrane was prepared with flat-sheet modulation and its characterization using FTIR and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and the gas transport mechanism, permeation performance and selectivity were studied. The results of the SEM analysis showed a smoother surface morphology and reduced cracks on the PET membrane surface. However, the more Pebax, the larger the cross-sectional pores of the membrane. The membrane performance mechanism uses the principles of adsorption and diffusion. The addition of optimum weight variation of 9% (w/w) has potential for H2 gas and the addition of Zeolite-NaY has potential for CO2 gas. The addition of Pebax increased membrane selectivity for CO2./CH4, CO2./N2 and H2/N2 gases, namely 1.31±0.04; 1.71±0.06 and 5±0.26, respectively. The addition of Zeolite-NaY to the PET-Pebax membrane decreased gas permeability, but increased selectivity, especially in the separation of CO2/CH4, CO2/N2 and N2/CH4 gases, namely ,34±0.45; 2.77±0.2 and 3.37±0.3, respectively.
