Abstract

The embankment dam as a heavy construction serves as a reservoir for large
amounts of water, it has the advantage that can be built in all subbase conditions
altough poor topography. The weakness is the specifically risk the of functional
and physical damage that occurs due to seepage. The seepage occurs naturally,
water flows from high to low pressure areas. This seepage also depends on the
condition of the existing soil gradation. So in an effort to solve these problems, it
is necessary to have a research approach to the condition of the soil on the subbase
of the dam to the amount of seepage discharge that can occur.
The research can be done by checking in the field or using a numerical
model. This research use a numerical modeling approach with the help of
GeoStudio: SEEP/W and SLOPE/W programs, based on time and cost
considerations of field analysis. The dam dimensions and water level conditions
used for the simulation modeling are data from the Tugu Dam, Trenggalek.
Meanwhile, the soil data used, namely 5 types of soil (clay, silty clay, silt, silty
sand, and sand), the soil data from several journals that also discuss the same topic
about seepage. This research simulation is divided into two; in the first simulation
the condition of the soil characteristics remains constant with the water level
elevation are changes; while in the second simulation the condition of the water
level remains constant with the soil characteristics are change. The first simulation
will model 1 characteristic of 5 soil types with the water table elevation increasing
by 5 meters from the subbase elevation of the dam, +181.00, to an elevation
below the flood water level., +256.00. The second simulation will model 3
characteristics of 5 soil types with 3 conditions of water level elevation; flood
water level, normal water level, and minimum water level.
vi
The modeling results obtained are seepage discharge and the value of the
safety factor for dam stability. The value of soil stability for the dam is very
necessary because it will affect the reinforcement requirements of the dam slope.
The results of the first simulation show that the seepage discharge and water level
elevation can be drawn by a logarithmic regression line, and has a safety factor
abouve 1,2. From the first simulation, it can be concluded that the sand soil has
the largest change in seepage discharge compared to other soil types of 1,90 x 10-3
m
3
/s, while smallest seepage discharge is clay soil of 1,47 x 10-9 m
3
/s. The results
of the second simulation show that the seepage discharge and saturated volumetric
water content also have a logarithmic regression. However, there are some results
from the second simulation that cannot be used as a reference in the future
because they have an R2 < 0.75 for logarithmic regression. These results are due
to the limited amount of data used and does not represent the required data. From
the results of the first and second simulations, the seepage discharge obtained is
below the average annual runoff limit of 1% of the 10-year re-flood discharge
calculated using Nakayasu's Synthetic Hydrograph Unit which is 5,99 m
3/s
