Abstract

An overcurrent relay (OCR) is a protection device that is usually used in power systems to protect the system from overcurrent or short-circuit faults. In the industrial field, OCR is also used to protect systems and installed equipment from damage due to short circuits. However, the use of OCR in industrial systems can distract the production process if the settings are not correct. To reduce this impact, protection coordination on industrial systems must be carried out. The objective of protection coordination is to get the correct relay settings so only a minimum portion of the power system is isolated when a fault occurs. That way, the production process can continue, and equipment damage can be minimized. This study proposes the OCR protection coordination on industrial systems using optimization algorithm. The optimization algorithm is used to simplify and speed up the search for the time dial setting (TDS) value. Modified adaptive particle swarm optimization (MAPSO) is a swarm-based algorithm used in this study. MAPSO itself was formed from the evolution of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Therefore, PSO is also used in this study as a comparison algorithm. The TDS value from the MAPSO and PSO optimization results will be compared with the TDS value from the manual calculation. Based on the total TDS value, MAPSO provides a TDS value that is more minimum than PSO. In addition, MAPSO performance is also better, when compared to PSO performance
